St Peter’s restoration could still be three years away Fundraising about to go up a gear „„ By Georgia O’Connor-Harding NEARLY SIX years after St Peter’s Anglican Church was destroyed in the February 22, 2011, earthquake it is still a long way off from being restored. Reverend Nick Mountfort told Western News they hope to have the church restored by 2019. Fundraising for the $2 million needed for the repair started in November. About $200,000 has so far been found. The money has been raised by donations from individuals and the parish selling prints, cards, and pens of the church as well as holding fairs. The resource consent for the rebuild of the historic church was first approved by the city council and Heritage New Zealand in 2015. But the official campaign to fundraise for the rebuild did not begin until November last year. Rev Mountfort said while the church started fundraising immediately after the resource consent was granted, it did not have a website and booklet ready for the official launch. The project will together cost $3.5 million,  $1.5 million above the insurance payout.
Undamaged stone walls will be strengthened to maintain the original architecture of the church while the north and south transept will be extended to allow for more amenities that were not in the old building. The extension of the northern transept will open up a gathering space including kitchen facilities. In addition, the southern transept will allow space for choir and worship space. “The church is beautiful but there was no toilet or space where you could have morning tea,� Rev Mountfort said. First established in 1858, the church, located on Yaldhurst Rd, holds a large amount of historical significance with the cemetery being the final resting place for several significant Cantabrians. Founder of the District Nursing Scheme Sibylla Emily Maude ‘Nurse Maude’, John Ballantyne, Sir Charles Bowen, Sir Henry and Lady Wigram are buried at the site. Rev Mountfort shares a special connection to the church with his great, great, great uncle Benjamin Mountfort being the original architect of the building. The site also has 147 trees situated around the cemetery, with some estimated to be the same age as the earliest church on the site. “The basic thing is we are just asking individuals to contribute. Skate park designs unveiled
By Georgia O’Connor-Harding SKATE BOWLS, pump tracks and a basketball half-court – that’s what the new skate parks in Halswell could soon contain. The proposed concept designs for two skate parks were released to the public by the city council last Friday for consultation. The controversial sites of the skate parks, to be located in the Halswell Chrys Horn Domain and Knights Stream Sports Park, were settled on last September. It comes after three petitions were presented to the HalswellHornby-Riccarton Community Board last year – two opposing the skate parks and one in support. The skate park at the Halswell Domain is proposed to have a small skate bowl, a rising quarter pipe with kerb lip, a mini-ramp, tear drop flyover, pyramid hip and a pump track with berms and rollovers. Knights Stream skate park may include quarter pipes, timber post skate elements, flow

bowl, pump bump and a bank and stair set up with a china bank. The plan is also for a basketball half-court, pavilion and additional sports fields to be developed separately from the skate area as part of the Knights Stream subdivision development. Halswell Community Project chairwoman Chrys Horn, who was an avid supporter of the skate park, said from the way it was designed, it won’t be a blot
on the landscape for people living nearby. She said the designs “look great” and were similar to the Prebbleton Community Park. The skate facilities have been designed by Raglan-based landscape architect Richard Smith, who has designed more than 70 skate parks throughout New Zealand. Consultation will remain open until February 20 before the final concept plans are presented to the community board

In Brief HORNBY HIGH REBUILD Contractors will be on site for Hornby High School’s $31 million rebuild in mid to late March with tenders for the project closing in mid-February. Western News reported last year that construction was expected to get under way this month. Hornby High principal Robin Sutton said the delay was due to critical discussions needed with staff and the community on how things will work at the new school. The first building to be built will house the whare, administration area, student cafe, the new library, and specialist teaching facilities. Designs for the rebuild were released in October last year. While the school is being rebuilt to provide for 800 students, the masterplan will allow for an additional expansion in buildings to allow the roll to grow to 1200. SPARKS RD REOPENING Sparks Rd will reopen on Sunday following the installation of the Southeast Halswell Waste Water Scheme. ROAD CLOSED Parts of Russley Rd and Memorial Ave will be closed from Friday until Monday as work on the $112 million Russley Rd upgrade continues. The work was delayed from getting under way last Friday due to bad weather.

Your Local Views By Mark Thomas – Fire Risk Management Officer WE’RE IN a new year and kitchen fires keep on occurring. An unattended cooking fire in Sockburn this week raised an interesting dilemma for landlords. Most know that there is a new building law requirement that landlords provide smoke detectors in their properties. In the case referred to there weren’t any smoke alarms in a rental where the tenant went off to work forgetting about food cooking on the stove. Smoke was seen and the Fire Service attended. There wasn’t too much of a mess and our crew made sure there was a brand new 10-year smoke detector installed before the occupant went back in. But what would be the result if the tenant had gone to bed after cooking rather than leaving for work? What if then the worst happened? How would the law treat the landlord? It’s a good enough reason to make sure an alarm is there and that the installation is recorded. Then it’s the tenant’s responsibility if the alarm is removed. Otherwise landlords, you could be in the gun!
Maintaining trust and confidence This week’s opinion piece is written by Canterbury district police commander Superintendent John Price about modern day policing I am extremely proud of the police team who serve the people and make a difference to the community every minute of every day as our team keep the peace and ensure the public will be safe and feel safe. In New Zealand our police have the implicit consent of the community. In order to do this we must be seen as policing with integrity and with accountability. Essentially we must have the trust and confidence of the community. Policing by consent follows the principles, ideas and ideals of Sir Robert Peel which define an ethical police organisation. These ‘Peelian Principles’ are as relevant today as they were in 1829 when they were established. Police, at all times, should maintain a relationship with the public that gives reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public, and the public are
the police. We maintain the highest level of ‘full trust and confidence’ of any policing organisation in the world, at about 80 per cent. By comparison, some policing jurisdictions have trust and confidence levels lower that 10 per cent, demonstrating that those organisations are not widely seen as ethical and trustworthy. If you have travelled overseas you will have seen examples of policing organisations whose approach is to police with fear and only force. We place enormous importance on maintaining and fostering the trust and confidence of our communities and we work hard to ensure we maintain our core values and hold each other to account. Having been a member for 30 years I think the community is justified in having trust and confidence in this organisation. In Canterbury we want to
ensure that people can be safe and feel safe and I’m sure that is a sentiment you will share. Our focus is on reducing harm caused to families, whether that be through violence in the home, death and injury on the roads, drug use or dishonesty offending. We also want to empower communities to work together, support each other and to speak up when something isn’t right. We work very closely with a range of agencies and community groups to ensure people receive the support they need and deserve. Over the past year we have targeted those bringing illegal

drugs and firearms into our communities and as a result have seized 140 illegal firearms. Each one of those is potentially a life saved. We have also prevented significant amounts of illegal drugs in getting to our streets. We are very lucky in that we receive a lot of positive feedback from members of the community for the work we do. To those people who have taken the time to contact us I would like you to know that your words of support mean a lot to myself and my team who come to work every day to make a difference in the lives of everyone so that we can be the safest country.

News Doubt cast on need for new library By Georgia O’Connor-Harding COMMUNITY board member Debbie Mora is questioning the need for new library and community centre in Hornby. She is concerned about the need to spend millions of dollars on a new library. She says the existing one is okay. The new library is part of a $13 million project which will include a service centre for Hornby. The location, which has sparked a lot of debate, will be discussed by the HalswellHornby-Riccarton Community Board next Tuesday. Deputations can be made from the public at the upcoming meeting. A swimming pool which is part of the plan will also be discussed. Said Ms Mora (left): “I believe we have a perfectly adequate Hornby Library. When we have lots of things we need to spend our money on I just don’t think it is fair to the ratepayer to spend money quite lavishly on a brand new library.” Statistics showed the library

had 174,178 visitors in the last year which averaged out to 3350 per week. A council service centre operates in the current library. Ms Mora said while the library could do with a facelift, it did not need to have nearly $13 million spent on it. Her views are supported by
Lorraine Donald, who has used the facility for about 12 years. “I don’t think we should be spending our money on a brand new facility because the thing is a part from community goodwill it is not a money making thing,” she said. The community board’s recommendations for a location for
the new centre will be forwarded to the city council for approval. The public will then be able to make submissions. Mrs Donald said she would make a submission against the plan, concerned it was a waste of ratepayers’ money. The new complex is likely to be at Denton Park.

Deans’ farm restoration to be decided By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A DECISION will be made on the restoration of two buildings connected to the pioneering Deans’ farming settlement. The city council will decide on Thursday whether to approve a heritage incentive grant of up to $62,326 for the repair work of two former farm buildings in Kahu Rd, near Riccarton Bush. A city council report says if the work goes ahead, it will mean some of the last early brick farm buildings in Canterbury will be restored. The application was made by the Christchurch Boys’ High School board of trustees, which owns the buildings. So far, the owners have $1,486,468 available from insurance and have raised a further $147,061 for repairs to enable the building to be reused. The cost of repairing the buildings is estimated to be $2,120,000, which means the owners have to find $546,395. The Deans brothers, William and John, were some of the earliest European settlers in the city and the site of their first farm was at Riccarton Bush.

Proud mum awarded for her Kate Russell has been a leader in the not-for-profit health sector for 24 years. Georgia O’Connor-Harding spoke to the Riccarton resident about working at the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation and what it was like to raise three children as a solo parent. Congratulations on becoming and Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit. You must be very excited? I was thrilled when I heard. My first reaction was who the heck must have nominated me? But I still don’t know and possibly never will. I am very honoured. I didn’t know I was going to get nominated. There are so many different sectors in my professional life where it could have come from, but they said health and governance and that has narrowed it down. What made you stick to helping the not-for-profit organisations? I fell into the not-for-profit sector by accident. My first job was as a fundraising assistant for Presbyterian Support. I got it because it was a 20-hour week job and it suited the fact I had small children at the time. I was in that job for a couple
of weeks and I had what you would describe as a vocational empathy of thinking, oh my goodness, this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. I was 30-years-old and aside from being a mother, I hadn’t figured out what I wanted to do careerwise. I had always done things to do with social justice. I had gone on the ‘no tour marches’ and was a junior member of human rights organisation, Amnesty International. Tell me about working at the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation? When I took this role, some of my colleagues at the national programme, Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand, were like isn’t that a step back because you are going into a regional role? But after the earthquakes, I very much had in my heart to do something in Canterbury. Medical research is something you don’t always get

immediate results. In the nearly three years I have been there, I can’t say there has been a new blockbuster drug. Rarely does medical research go ahead in a quantum leaps, it is these little baby steps that happen over a

number of years. Could give me a picture of the research you are doing at the moment? We just finished a study on the use of vitamin C and breast cancer. We are also funding a young
women at Otago University who is looking to use vitamin C for people who have got ear infections. We are also pivotal in supporting the development of the UC Rose Centre for Stroke Recovery and Research.

role in medical research How do you think our medical research compares to the rest of the world? We punch very well above our weight. What gets achieved here in research for the fraction of a cost is really quite astounding. In spite of the frustration we all naturally get with the health system and getting put on waiting lists and restricted medicines, we still have universal public health care here. When you look at the hideous situation people in the United States find themselves in, where they don’t have health insurance, we have a fabulous system here. We only pay $5 per item for medicine which may cost up to $150. Still some people complain about that. You often hear about there not being enough beds at Christchurch Hospital. For sure, Christchurch Hospital is an incredibly busy hospital. But the financial results and just the strategic results the CDHB gets in terms of the development of new services; they are just terrific and stack up very well compared to the rest of the district health boards around the country. I can tell you these places are populated by bloody good people who all have a very

big heart for what they do. How old were you when you first had children? I had my first child when I was 19. It was a surprise. It wasn’t in my plan to get pregnant in my second year of university. By the time Sam, my eldest boy, was one I was back at university doing a full-time course, looking after him and holding down two parttime jobs. I have no idea how I

did it. Would that have been one of the most difficult times in your life? No. I always had plenty of family support around me. I have a very close family. But the most difficult time of my life was when I broke up with my first husband. I was a solo parent on my own for seven years with three children. For me, it got to

the stage where I was very poor. I wouldn’t say I had hit rock bottom, but I was very poor and I had to work very hard and make significant sacrifices for the well-being of my children. I was there for some time and I had to make a conscious decision to climb myself out of that. To not be dependent on welfare. How did you get through? The whole family had to make sacrifices for that to occur. There were a lot of times where I couldn’t go to the kids’ sports days. I couldn’t be the one to drop them off at school or look after them after school. I recognise my children paid the price for me putting a lot of evidence on the development of my career. I had a 12, eight and four-yearold. What do your children say about it now? They are very proud. From time to time, we have these conversations where I say I still carry some guilt about not being there because I had to work. I had to be the main bread-winner in the family. They are very pragmatic about it and say what you taught us is a really good work ethic. We understand why you did what you did.
What was the job that got you to turn your career around? Probably the one that started me on the road to financial recovery and career development was the one at CCS Disability Action where I was the regional fundraisng manager. That was where I felt like my skills were fully utilised and I was given a sufficient amount of authority. Have you found a new partner? We are coming up to our second year now and it is all very new. He lives in his house and I live in my house and we have a very nice time when we are together. But I am independent and decided I am not really cut out for living with another person. I am much too independent. So you are keeping the magic alive? Exactly, and my independence. I make my own money. If I want a diamond ring, I buy it, I don’t worry about someone else. I watched my mother model independence to me because my father died when I was 12. She had a very hard road to hoe and she was and still is an extremely hard-worker. And again, a very independent thinker, bright and an inspiring woman.

St Margaret’s Church rebuild on the cards By Andrew King A BISHOPDALE church gutted by an arsonist could be torn down with the rebuild under way by mid-year. Work set to finish on uni project By Georgia O’Connor-Harding THE HEART of the new engineering precinct at Canterbury University is set to be completed in time for the beginning of the academic year. The university released a series of images online showing what the $144 million redevelopment of the engineering precinct will look like. It first announced the College of Engineering would be redeveloped in 2014. The Core, at the centre of the renewal will include spaces for students and staff to socialise, built-in workstations, a cafe and flexible seating options. CBHS fights liquor bid By Georgia O’Connor-Harding ONE OF the city’s top schools is trying to stop a new liquor store from opening up near its gates. Christchurch Boys’ High School has opposed a controversial off-licence liquor application on Riccarton Rd. The school is one of the latest to oppose the liquor licence application made by PM Liquors Ltd, which wants to open a store on 76 Riccarton Rd, directly next to a Ministry of Social Development’s Work and Income New Zealand building. Christchurch Boys’ High School headmaster Nic Hill (left) said the school was concerned about the close proximity of the liquor store to the school and boarding house. The liquor store, to be known as The Liquor Shop Riccarton, would be located about 850m away from the school grounds. “We are doing it for Christchurch Boys’ High School but there are lots of students in that area. Submissions have also been made by the medical officer of health, Paula Williams, and Constable Adrienne Jones. Residents nearby raised concerns in October last year, saying there were already too many liquor stores in the area and it was “inappropriate” to place a liquor store next to Work and Income. A hearing was to have been held on February 2 but has now been adjourned with no date determined.

Rising young Fijian rugby player By Gordon Findlater ONE OF the top try-scorers in last year’s UC Championship has been snapped up by the Canberra Raiders. Former Burnside High School rugby player Mika Ravalawa has arrived in Australia to begin a two-year contract with the NRL side. As part of the contract, he will be working within the club as a cadet, which will see him working from Raiders headquarters and assisting with club promotions and activities. The-19-year-old will also be staking his claim for game time with the under-20 squad in the National Youth Competition. “I’m really thankful of the opportunity the Raiders have given me and I’m looking forward to settling in and getting to know all my new teammates. The training is already at a really high level and I need to make sure I work hard and, hopefully, get a chance to play in the NYC team,” said Ravalawa. Born in Fiji, Ravalawa made the move to Christchurch early last year after receiving a scholarship at Burnside’s international rugby programme. The explosive back had captained the Fijian under-18 sevens team and was recommended to the programme

He was one of the standout players in the UC Championship, finishing with 14 tries, the second most out of all players. His efforts helped Burnside win the South Island co-ed title. The 20-14 win over South Otago High School qualified them for the national co-ed finals tournament. It was on this stage that Ravalawa was spotted by Raiders recruitment and high performance manager Peter Mulholland. “He was outstanding in his position as an outside back; he has pure athleticism and, after I spoke with him, he also had a strong knowledge on rugby league.” “Importantly as well, he’d been in a good environment at Burnside school where he had successfully made the transition away from his home and this made us aware he can adapt to living in a new environment, which is important for a young player at this age,” said Mulholland. “There’s no doubting his natural ability, it’s just a matter of him working hard and taking the next steps in his career under the coaching of Brett White and the NYC coaching staff.”

By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A MIDDLETON Grange School pupil’s sporty-artwork has scored the top prize in a national art competition. Bethany Conner’s design, highlighting some of the country’s most popular sports, was hand-picked by former All Black Kees Meeuws to feature on thousands of school exercise books throughout the country. She won the primary school category of the Cool Cover Comp, organised by Warehouse Stationery. As well as having her artwork displayed around the country, Bethany, 11, won herself an iPad and her school a $500 Warehouse Stationery voucher. “What I really liked about the art piece was that it incorporated a lot of ball sports which are favourites for Kiwis,” Meeuws said. As a former student of the Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland, Meeuws was chosen to judge the competition because of his art background. “I did two years before rugby came calling . . . but I have always kept my hand in art and I am an avid collector of art. I’ve got more pieces than I have places to put them in my house,” he said. Bethany’s artwork highlighted sports including hockey, rugby, tennis and netball. “I incorporated lots of different sports when they were just about to get the goal,” Bethany said.

She has been drawing for as long as she can remember, has an interest in sport and plays soccer and touch rugby. But she said her favourite subject at school was maths and she wants to be an engineer. Samantha Monteclaro, of Maungaraki School in Wellington, won the intermediate school category, while Lily Martin-Babin, of Marlborough Girls’ College, won the secondary category. “There are three completely different designs. For me, it was fantastic to see that level of talent,” Meeuws said. Each exercise book sold will help fund a Salvation Army tertiary education scholarship. Stray cat problem on the increase By Gabrielle Stuart THEY ARE cute, fluffy – and reaching high levels in Christchurch. Cat Rescue Christchurch has just had its busiest month on record, taking in 137 stray cats and kittens for rehoming in December. That was up from 80 at the same time the year before. It has left the charity with more than $12,800 in vet bills for December alone. The numbers show no signs of slowing, with another 40 arrived already this month. Managing director Beki Milligan said the charity had been working for more than a decade to try to reduce Christchurch’s stray cat problem, so the spike was disheartening. “I like to think we’re getting somewhere, but as soon as we think that, something like December will happen,” she said. “It doesn’t take long for a problem to get out of control, especially when it’s cats. They can start reproducing at 16 weeks, so if you’ve got one litter and in four months they are reproducing themselves, then you can have a colony of 50 in six months.” The majority of the cats had been living wild for a long time, she said, often in Christchurch’s industrial areas.

Pets & their owners to celebrate new pet food shop Tails will be wagging and whiskers quivering with excitement as the dogs and cats of the south-west areas get wind of the new pet food shop that has opened in Rolleston. Real Pet Food, previously trading as Hillmorton Pet Food in Hoon Hay for almost 25 years, has just opened its doors in Jones Road. Owner Bernie Hutton is thrilled with his new premises in a newly constructed block of five shops, which he says are much bigger than his former shop and are equipped with brand-new machinery for processing the pet food. The Hillmorton staff members have come to work at the new premises, plus an additional staff member has been employed, and since the shop opened many of the Hillmorton customers have been in for their pet supplies, Bernie says. These also include a range of birdseed. Real Pet Food offers fresh, raw meat, which the business sources from reputable suppliers, processes on site without the addition of any artificial colours or preservatives, and displays for sale in the store’s brandnew chillers and freezers. “This is proper food without any additives so it’s better for the animals, plus they don’t eat as much because it satisfies them,” says Bernie. Real Pet Food is also offering online sales through its new website, www.realpetfood.nz. The meat is available for purchase frozen in carton lots, and there is no delivery charge for customers across Christchurch city and the Selwyn district. your way back to it As we return to our normal daily routines after the holidays you may begin to find the odd ache or pain creeping in.

his is a good indicator from our bodies, that the holiday routine was somewhat different. Perhaps you sit a lot for work and you were on the go or, you are normally more active and the holiday break was more sedentary. Either way the sooner you pay attention to these signals the easier it will be to deal with it. So what can you do to ward off pain and stiffness and boost your energy and alertness? 10 simple stretching exercises at your desk that will release tension from head to toe. They take only a few minutes. Set the alarm on your cell phone or computer to go off every hour to remind you it’s time to get up and stretch. Just stand up and sit down - no hands If you stand up and sit down (over and over) without using your hands it can be a challenge, do it while you’re on the phone; no one will know. Shrug your shoulders - to release the neck and shoulders Inhale deeply and shrug your shoulders, lifting them high up to your ears. Hold. Release and drop. Repeat three times. Loosen the hands with air circles Clench both fists, stretching both hands
out in front of you. Make circles in the air, first in one direction, to the count of ten. Then reverse the circles. Shake out the hands. Point your fingers - good for hands, wrist, and forearms
Stretch your left hand out in front of you, pointing fingers toward the floor. Use your right hand to increase the stretch, pushing your fingers down and toward the body. Be gentle do the same with the other hand. Now stretch your left hand out straight in front, wrist bent, with fingers pointing skyward. Use your right hand to increase the stretch, pulling the fingers back toward your body. Do the same on the other side. Release the upper body with a torso twist Inhale and as you exhale, turn to the right and grab the back of your chair with your right hand, and grab the arm of the chair with your left. With eyes level, use your grasp on the chair to help twist your torso around as far to the back of the room as possible. Hold the twist and let your eyes continue the stretch see how far around the room you can peer. Slowly come back to facing forward. Repeat on the other side. Do leg extensions Grab the seat of your chair to brace yourself
and extend your legs straight out in front of you so they are parallel to the floor.Flex and point your toes five times. Release. Repeat. Stretch your back with a “big hug” Hug your body, placing the right hand on your left shoulder and the left hand on your right shoulder. Breathe in and out, releasing the area between your shoulder blades. Cross your arms - for the shoulders and upper back Extend one arm out straight in front of you. With the other hand, grab the elbow of the outstretched arm and pull it across your chest, stretching your shoulder and upper back muscles. Hold. Release. Stretch out the other arm in front of you - repeat. Stretch your back and shoulders with a “leg hug” Sit on the edge of your chair (if it has wheels, wedge the chair against the desk or
